Scots shortchanged (well, that’s no suprise is it?)

Back by popular demand, (well, mine actually) Reverse Sweep’s northern correspondent Jack S Pratt has spotted something else that annoys him….
It is rare for me to sympathize with the good folk of Aberdeen but, I do feel for those who turned out to watch the game between Scotland and New Zealand.  Anyone who paid attention yesterday’s cricket scores will have noticed the contempt with which they were treated. It does not take a tactical mastermind to predict that the paying public’s interest in a good day’s cricket would have been best served by the Kiwis batting first. So, they put Scotland in, bowl them out for 101(including 15 extras) and knock the runs off in 14 overs allowing them to put their feet up while those who paid to see a rare day’s cricket in Aberdeen go home thoroughly pissed off. Once again enthusiastic cricket fans have paid good money to be treated very shoddily.

  1. Is there even the demand for cricket in Scotland? How many people turned up to watch this game?

Oh dear, Mr Spratt is grumpy. Possibly the alarming lack of salt in his diet has rendered him incapable of grasping a fine point which must be considered whenever New Zealand play Scotland at any sport.

There are no holds barred, for this is a classic case of The Empire Strikes Back.

Think of how the Aussies lift their game to new heights of pure venom whenever they face England.

In similar vein, it must be remembered that the Scottish influence upon New Zealand is major, possibly verging on excessive.

The Scottish diaspora went all over the world in the 19th century, but arguably nowhere in greater numbers, proportionately, than to NZ.

Evidence? It is popularly believed that there are more highland pipe bands in NZ than in Scotland.

The Scots have had more influence on NZ politics and every other aspect of life than the English, Irish or Welsh.

The result? I’d like to suggest that New Zealand is Scotland’s only colony. Which makes Scotland the empire. To be struck back at.

    Hence Aberdeen last weekend.

If the Scots introduced bagpipes into New Zealand then they deserve everything they get
