Quiz question of the day

Yesterday’s quiz was answered in a jiffy – it was Denis Compton who started his county career at No 11. So let’s see if today’s is any more cunning.

Name the bowler – and his nationality – who resorted to bowling in splints to try to prove he was not throwing. Extra kudos if you can pinpoint the year!

  1. That would be Jack Marsh, the Aboriginal Australian who played only six first-class games for New South Wales. His throwing controversy came in 1900 and many suspect he never played more because of racism. His obituary after he was killed in a fight read, rather unpalatably to modern readers: “a darky troubled with manners which white brothers found impossible to put up with”.

  2. It is Jack Marsh, from Australia.
